In the poem by Edgar Allen Poe, he does uses symbolism. And in this particular poem, the raven was a symbol of death. This raven suddenly appears at the narrator's door just as death suddenly appears. The narrator fears the raven as well as death. The raven was also a symbol of emotional pain.
